Is Philips Hue Bright Enough? The Rundown

Are Philips Hue Bright Enough?

As a smart home enthusiast, I’ve tried different products. But there is one brand that has always stuck with me—Philips Hue lights.

The first time I used them, it was like magic. The lights came on by themselves as soon as I walked into the room. They knew when to turn off and when to dim. They even changed colors!

Despite being among the most expensive on the market, Philips Hue never disappoints in quality and reliability. They are among the giant in the lighting business with a vast amount of products. Philips Hue sells light bulbs, lamps, outdoor fixtures, and light strips- the list goes on and on.

In terms of brightness, it depends on what you are using these bulbs for.

Below, I will explore Philips Hue’s color temperature and where each bulb is suited.

Philips Hue Brightness Depends On The Number Of Lumens

When lighting a particular room or buying a light fixture, it’s important to understand how many lumens you’ll need and how much that bulb can produce.

For instance, if you are lighting your kitchen, bathroom, or garage, you will need anyway from 60 to 80 lumens per square foot for each of those rooms depending on what you want to accomplish there. A kitchen is a place where a lot of tasks occur like cooking and prepping food.

But for a bedroom—where there are no task-related activities going on, then maybe only 30 or 40 lumens per square foot is sufficient.

A dining room will require a little more than a bedroom—maybe around 40 lumens per square foot. However, that’s just a general rule of thumb. You can adjust the brightness depending on what mood you want to create. For a 228 feet dining room, at a ceiling height of 8ft, you would need at least 4,703 lumens.

That’s six Philips Hue A19 Bulb at 800 lumens or eleven A19 Filament Bulb at 450 lm.

Another factor to consider is the size of the room. For example, you will need more bulbs to light a large room while less to light a small room. To calculate the square foot of a room, multiply the length by the width.

Philips Hue Has introduced 1100 And 1600 Lumens Bulbs

We already know that Philips Hue has an array of ambiance bulbs from Hue E26- 800 lumens, Hue E26 BR30- 650 Lumens, Hue A19, and G25- 530 lumens, and Hue E12-450 lumens. You can use none of these bulbs for a small storage room with one light socket. So introducing the 1100 and 1600 lumen bulbs come in handy in this situation.

The 1100 and 1600 lumen options for hue white ambiance and color A19 light bulbs are already on the market. While 800 lumens is pretty standard, the 1100 and 1600 lumen options provide more light, with 1100 being like the 75-watt equivalent and 1600 being like an incandescent bulb of 100 watts.

The ability to add additional light when needed is so helpful—it provides a lot of options without having to add more light bulbs to your room. With the many features of the Hue bulbs, you can dim these bulbs if it is too bright for your space.

Further, since their release, back in September 2021, many have praised Philips Hue A19 1100 and 1600 lm bulbs for their brightness.

Most Of Philips Hue Lights Are Best For Ambient

Apart from their standard light bulbs, Philips Hue has light strips that are very bright. You can use them under your cabinets to add additional lighting. I love Philips Hue, but they produce soft ambient lighting. While this is an important aspect of lighting, you can use Philips hue bulbs for other things. For instance, the Hue Play is perfect for an entertainment setup.

Their outdoor lights include the Lily White has a high color temperature of around 2000K-6500K, which is sufficient for outdoor lighting. These fixtures are expensive, but there are no complaints about brightness. However, for ambient lighting. According to the PCMag, if you are looking for an intense white, this isn’t the best choice. They produce a soft white that is perfect for relaxation.

Another example of ambient style lighting is their Retrofit Recessed Downlight. It again produces soft lighting, which isn’t the best for general lighting.

Therefore, for their price tag, I strongly believe that you are paying for the experience and their features. When it comes to brightness, Philips Hue lacks this in some areas. Luckily, they are listening to their customers and producing bulbs with higher lumens like the 1100 and 1600 lm bulbs.

There Are Some Philips Hue Fixtures For Task Lighting

Task lighting is a type of light that illuminates an area where you are working, reading, or performing a task. This lighting is essential because it allows you to see what you’re doing.

Philips Hue does offer some amazing products for task lighting like the Amaze Suspension light. It offers 4000K at 2900lm and they are very bright. So while their standard bulbs are mainly ambient, they do feature some lamps that cater to other layers of lighting.

The Hue table lamp: Philips Hue has a variety of table lamps to suit your task and ambiance. Yes, they are bright enough for every occasion. They feature fixtures that generate anyway from 730lm-1050lm and have dimming options to tailor to all your lighting needs.

To Recap- Philips Hue Brightness

When choosing light bulbs for your home, consider the size and the purpose of the room. Overall, Philips Hue has quality products that offer many fixtures to cater to your need. Therefore, to answer the question above Is Philips Hue bright enough? It depends on the bulb’s lumens and its purpose.
